Why do I write in English?

I grew up reading both English and Malayalam (my mother tongue) in the same way I would drink my bed tea and after an hour, my pre-breakfast bed coffee. Both languages come naturally to me because of my avid reading in my childhood. I started writing in Malayalam at a very early age and tried my hand at English when I felt more confident with the language. ‘Why I Write in English’ is a difficult question to answer but there are a few reasons I could confidently list. Firstly, English is a language that has fascinated me always with its wide vocabulary and vast exposure to life in an international context. Secondly, I've chosen English language and literature as my field of study and teaching English as my vocation. But, the most important thing that led me to write in English is the power and flexibility of the language along with its global acceptance.

POEMS

1.    NOSFERATU

Yes, he comes
day presences in coffins
tucked away in remote castles
bite marks on the
back necks of pretty women
rapid loss of blood at night
pallor
automatic abortions
Yes, he comes
as a cat
a dog
a bat
a shining ball
a shade
a smell
a memory
Yes, he comes.

2.    CRUSOE

He who’s deposited
in an island of solitude
who marks time
on a piece of log
masturbates into
the endless and timeless waters
scribbling messages on a
papyrus scroll and
sending them in a bottle
to the world at large.
