Sambalpur University honours Harekrishna Meher


Swabhava-Kavi Gangadhar Meher (1862-1924) is well- known as ‘Prakriti-Kavi’ of Oriya Literature.  On the occasion of 150th Birth Day Celebration of this great poet, organized by Sambalpur University in Sambalpur, Orissa, on 13 August 2011, Dr.Harekrishna Meher, Sr. Reader and Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Government Autonomous College, Bhawanipatna, as the invited Chief Speaker, delivered his speech on literary works and life of the poet with their significance in the present society. In this literary meeting held in the University campus, Vice-Chancellor (i/c)-cum-President Prof. Kailas Chandra Saraf, Registrar Dr. Sudhansu Shekhar Rath, University Journal ‘Saptarshi’s Editor Prof. Krushna Chandra Pradhan, Chief Guest Poet Aswini Kumar Mishra and Co-ordinator  Rajendra Kumar Thaty  were present there on the dais.

During this function, Sambalpur University conferred on Dr. Harekrishna Meher, the Koshali Award entitled ‘Nilamadhab Panigrahi Samman’ (2010) for his book ‘Koshali Meghaduta’, the complete Koshali lyrical translation of Kalidasa’s ‘Meghadutam’. This Award with Maanapatra and Angavastra was presented to Dr. Meher by the Presdent-VC on behalf of the University. Every year Sambalpur Univesity gives this Award to an eminent litterateur for Translation and Creative literary work in Sambalpuri-Koshali language and literature.
