2 Nov 2014: Ibohal Kshetrimayum’s debut poetry book released

It no longer rains like before’ is the debut collection of poems by Ibohal Kshetrimayum. The book published by Partridge India, a Penguin Random House Company, was recently released.

Born in Imphal, Manipur, Ibohal lives in Shillong, Meghalaya. He says he waits for poems to come to him and never forces a poem out of himself. He believes in the passivity of a poet, who receives every poem as a gift from his muse. He engages in the past, present and future of his love, land and life in his poetry. At the same time he suffers trying to escape into a realm of pure poetry, while living amidst horrifying situations haunting his people.

Eminent poet K Satchidanandan writes in his Foreword: “Ibohal Kshetrimayum’s poems do not lend themselves to the stereotypical clichés often deployed by the regular critics and anthologists in their discussions of the poetry of the North-east India. In fact, the stereotype is an illusion as much as the North-east itself, which is an amorphous, vaguely defined construct of the mainstream imagination.   … Ibohal is a poet of Images; his poetry has an unfailing visual impact. Look at the very opening poem, for example, which has these imagery: the blind laughing in the heart, the woman’s hair darkening the dream’s path, a sea roaring in her curls, an animal felt on her skin, a burning river rushing out of her crevice ……”
