'Everyday is a Journey, and the journey itself is home.'
- Matsuo Basho
A haibun might be defined as short prose written in the spirit of a haiku. It is a terse, relatively short prose poem in the haikai style, usually including both lightly humorous and more serious elements. A haibun usually ends with a haiku. Like haiku, it begins in the everyday events of its authorís life and can be described as a narrative of an epiphany.
The book, Journeys- An Anthology of International Haibun, edited by Dr. Angelee Deodhar, the doyen of Japanese literary forms in India, is the first book of this delectable literary form from India. Within the pages of this book, 25 of the most prolific International haibun writers of our times, live, breathe and share their stories with the reader. Postcard-sized paintings of words trapeze in themes that touch almost every aspect of human life, emotions and relationships. The works span ages and geographic distances that no recent book can probably emulate. The 122 works in this book are each masterly crafted, beautifully lyrical and deeply haunting pieces of literature.
For the time-crunched reader of today, haibun is the perfect literary experience. It allows the reader to meander into the labyrinths of the writer's very personal experiences - both real and imagined - while also allowing the piece to not wander beyond the short attention span.
Editor Angelee Deodharís selection is judicious, while her introduction and notes are as informative as they are precise. The book is published by Nivasini Publishers, Hyderabad. This book is a milestone for its content and its ambition of putting India on the map of International map of Japanese literary forms.
The book was launched recently at the SIES College in Mumbai, amongst a packed hall of enthusiastic literature students, who also benefitted by a workshop on this art-form conducted by Dr. Angelee Deodhar and Sonam Chhoki of Bhutan.
Price: Rs 300/- India and $18 (Including Postage) for all other countries.
The book will be available at Flipkart and Amazon soon. In the meantime, for copies contact Dr Angelee Deodhar at email@example.com.
