Vempalli Shariff has won the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar (Telugu) for the year 2012 for his short story collection Jumma which reflects the Muslim life in the rural Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. The book contains 12 stories which he has written over a decade and they are redolent with the fragrance of social and communal harmony. Shariff received the award, shield, and a purse of Rs 50,000 from Vishwanath Pratap Tiwary, President of the Akademi at a function at Guwahati on March 18, 2013.

Born on April 18, 1980 in the Vempalli village of Kadapa district, Sheikh Mohammad Shariff, popular as Vempalli Shariff, has so far published 70 stories, out of which 50 are for children. Young in age and young at heart, Shariff is the Chief Sub Editor & News Presenter for Sakshi TV in Hyderabad. He was earlier an RJ with AIR, Hyderabad. Having an academic flair, he is doing PhD with the Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University.
