Sunil Gangopadhyay no more

Sunil Gangopadhyay, the iconic Bangla poet and novelist, who fired the imagination of a generation of Bengali youth, passed away last night. The end came at about 2 a.m. when he had a massive heart attack. Many did not know (it was a closely guarded secret) that he has been suffering from prostate cancer for the last few months. With him an age has come to an end.

Muse India received the above communication, with a profound sense of sorrow, from Dr M Asaduddin, Jamia Milia, Delhi. Sunil Gangoapadhyay was the President of Central Sahitya Akademi and we had invited him to be the Guest of Honour at the inaugural function of Hyderabad Literary Festival in Jan 2013 and deliver the keynote address. I spoke to him around three weeks ago. He expressed his regret saying he would be stepping down as the President in Jan 2013 and during that period would not be able to come to HLF.

Muse India expresses its heartfelt condolences to family members of the celebrated writer. May his soul rest in peace.
