Hiren Bhattacharya passes away


Popular and celebrated Assamese poet and winner of Sahitya Akademi Award and several honours Hiren Bhattacharya passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Wednesday, Jul 4, 2012. He had been undergoing treatment for lung and urinary infection since June 14. He was 80 and leaves behind his wife and a daughter.
 
Born in 1932 in Jorhat, Hiruda, as he was popularly known, won the Sahitya akademi Award in 1992 for his anthology of poems "Saichor Pathar Manuh.' He was the poetry editor of the prestigious Assamese fortnightly Prantik for over three decades. His numerous honours included the Bharatiya Bhasha Parishad Award in 1993, Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1987, the Bishnu Rabha Award 1984-85 and the Rajaji award of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.
 
A pall of gloom descended over the entire State at his death. Assam CM Tarun Gogoi and Governor J B Patnaik led the State in mourning the demise of Hiruda.
