Usha Akella’s Poetry Caravan in the US

Usha Akella, Muse India’s Contributing Editor for ‘Writing of Indian Diaspora,’ has been spearheading the movement, Poetry Caravan, in the US. She writes:

I am pleased to announce the launch of the Poetry Caravan, Austin Chapter. Keeping the volunteer spirit of the original caravan intact, the Austin chapter will be slanted slightly differently. A Young Caravan, kids will offer their musical and poetical talents to the disadvantaged in senior homes, hospitals and women shelters. Performances begin this month with the support of Linda Day and Beth Blackerby who are violinists with the Austin symphony.

The poetry caravan was first launched in Greenburgh / White Plains, NY as I felt propelled to take poetry to those who could not reach it on their own. It started in 2003 October and continues due to an incredible commitment of the poets there even though I left NY. The caravan has offered between 600-700 free readings to people at a disadvantage. All programs are free.

If you would like to start a Poetry Caravan chapter in your own city do let me know.
