21 Apr 2017 - 7th Premchand Memorial Lecture at Jamia Millia Islamia on Apr 18, 2017

The Jamia Premchand Archives and Literary Centre (JALPC), Jamia Millia Islamia organised the Seventh Premchand Memorial Lecure on “Premchand: Shodh ki Nayi Dishayen” which was delivered by Dr Kamal Kishore Goenka, Eminent Scholar of Premchand Literature and a decorated litterateur. The session was presided over by Prof M Asaduddin, Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Languages, and conducted by Prof Sabiha Anjum Zaidi, the Director of JALPC.

Attended by several research scholars and those involved with Premchand Studies, the lecture proved immensely beneficial in laying out a blueprint for what efforts needed to be undertaken to enrich the Premchand archives in India as well as the directions research should take. With several allusions to path breaking stories by Premchand – ‘Baalak’, ‘Jihaad’ and ‘Mukti dhan’ to name a few, Dr Goenka stressed upon the sheer contemporaneity of Premchand, and the Herculean canvas of over 3000 characters created by him in his oeuvre. He also brought to fore the significant omissions in the biography, Kalam ke Sipahi, penned by Amrit Rai, son of Premchand.
