05 Dec 2016: Gayatri Gamarsh Memorial Awards 2016 to Sujay Datta, Sonnet Mondal

The Gayatri Gamarsh Memorial awards 2016 for literary excellence were awarded to Prof Sujay Dutta (in Bengali category) and Sonnet Mondal (in English category). Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay was given honourable mention in English category. The award which is sponsored by The Ananda Mandir Trust based in New Jersey, USA has been recongnising two poets – one writing in Bengali and the other in English, each year since 2011. The award is given to a published poet in Bengali and an Indian English poet whose recent stories, articles or poems have appeared in major North American Publications.

While Sujay Dutta is a professor at the University of Akron, Sonnet Mondal has numerous international publications to his credit and has read at several major literature festivals all over the world. In 2015, Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay was named Nashville's first Youth Poet Laureate, and earlier this year she was selected as Southeast Regional Youth Poet Laureate.

The citation for the Gayatri Gamarsh Award 2016 for the respective poets is:-

Sujay Dutta: The award recognizes him for his creative and skillful story-telling.

Sonnet Mondal: The award recognizes him for brilliant and multilayered interplay of ideas and imagery in his poetry.

Lagnajita Mukhopadhyay: The award recognizes her for giving voice to the agonies and aspirations of today's youth.
