31 Oct 2016: Tuhin Harit’s debut novel “Mannu Rikshewala”

Mannu Rikshewala, the debut novel by Tuhin Harit has come out.  Jerry Almeida, founder Joy of Giving and writer of Karma Kurry has written the Foreword.

Tuhin, born in a middle class family in a small town of western Uttar Pradesh, has been writing ever since he can remember. Apart from fiction, he also writes about politics and macro-economics. His views on the Indian budget and renewable industry have been published by Business Line, Quartz and Energetica. He is an IIT (Roorkee) and ISB educated investment banker and lives in Mumbai.

Many of his childhood memories originate from congested roads and busy markets, and ubiquitous in these settings were thin, sweaty rickshawalas. From the passenger seat, he thoroughly enjoyed having casual conversations with them. He loved to see them enter an enthusiastic, often grumbling monologue, revealing carefully hidden secrets from the darkest crevices of society. These conversations, along with his first-hand observations during religious riots in his hometown, shaped his social and political views.

The  story is about a rickshawala… how in his deepest crisis he finds something like love, and how the fear of losing it makes him aware of a choice he never knew he had. It’s a sometimes dark, sometimes light, with an attitude of take-on-life as-it-is. It also covers the role ‘chance’ plays in it. And it is also about the subtle belief, that if we go deep enough, we’re the same souls. Just the means of finding that soul are different. Some find it in god, some in work and some, like the protagonist of this book, find it in the deepest pits of hopelessness.
