6 Sep 2016: Lakshmi Kannanís debut novel in English released on Aug 30

The debut English novel, The Glass Bead Curtain, by bilingual author and remarkable storyteller Lakshmi Kannan, who writes as Kaaveri in Tamil, was released by eminent academics in a glittering event held at the India International Centre, New Delhi on Aug 30, 2016.

The panel chaired by Prof. Mrinal Miri, eminent educationist, Rajya Sabha member and former Director IIAS, Shimla, consisted of Ms. Renu Kaul Verma, from Vitasta Publishing Pvt. Ltd., Prof. Malashri Lal, Convener of English Board, Sahitya Akademi and former Dean of Colleges, University of Delhi, Prof. Malati Mathur from the Department of English, IGNOU, in conversation with the author, Dr. Lakshmi Kannan. The program was conducted by the editor of the book, Ms. Veena Batra. The informative and engaging conversation dwelt on various aspects of the remarkable novel set in pre independence Madras Presidency and the variety of social issues it deftly addresses, including child marriage, child widowhood, education for women, and unconventional career choices in this case, that of a Badminton Coach that women take up despite many obstacles. Through the delightful characters of the heroine Kalyani and her inspirational aunt, Vishalakshi Athai, Kannan spins an endearing tale around a fairly conservative Tam-Brahm family.

The program was attended by several renowned creative writers and academics, including Keki N Daruwalla, Varsha Das, Sukrita Paul Kumar, Vidya Rao, Kamala Narasimhan, Anuradha Marwah, Chandra Mohan to name a few. The program ended with a delightful book signing session, with many students eagerly awaiting their turn to grab the enjoyable must-read.
