27 Apr 2016: Educationist Prof IV Chalapati Rao no more

Renowned and respected educationist, administrator, writer and editor Prof IV Chalapati Rao passed away in Hyderabad on Apr 27. He was 93 and is survived by a son. Though he had been suffering frequently after a fall in the bath room a year ago, his death was peaceful.

Born in 1923 and originally hailing from Machilipatnam he was topper in MA (English Literature) from Nagpur University. He taught at Nagpur, Bhimavaram and Eluru in private colleges; and later on as a lecturer in government colleges at Rajahmundry and Kadapa. He served as principal at Kakinada and Karimnagar. At Karimnagar he took over from Kavi Samrat Viswanatha Satyanarayana.

He also served as registrar in the then Central Institute of English (now EFLU), Hyderabad. As advisor in the Commissionerate of Higher Education and as Deputyy Director of Higher Education in the government of Andhra Pradesh, he significantly contributed to educational development in the state.

Recipient of the prestigious Pratibha Rajiv Puraskaram (2009), for life-time achievement from the government of Andhra Pradesh, he authored over 30 books on various matters including his autobiography, What Life Taught Me. He was renowned as a communication expert and motivational speaker also. More than anything else, he was a personification of simple living and high thinking.

He was the chief editor of Triveni, a literary & cultural quarterly, and of Twilight Life, a monthly newsletter of the Association for the Care of the Aged. He also served the old age homes and the educational institutions of Andhra Mahila Sabha.

He was active throughout though he lost one eye in an accident even while in service. He had the privilege of meeting leading freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, and had a close association with Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya. A number of Chalapati Rao’s students rose to eminent positions – VS Rama Devi (Governor of Karnataka and HP); CS Rao (film director & writer); KVK Raju (founder of the Nagarjuna group of companies); Anantha Swamy ( Vice Chancellor, Osmania University);  Prof Anumandla Bhoomaiah (Vice Chancellor, PS Telugu University); Dr P Venugopala Rao (Professor in Emory University, Atlanta); and Dr V Narayana Rao (Professor, Wisconsin University).
