  ARTICLES / DISCUSSIONS

Writing on the enigmatic yet brilliant Ghalib, Prof N K Singh writes, “When the world is getting narrower with religious bigotry and inclusive culture, his poetry stands for freedom, liberty and grace in living, despite the rat race of materialism and greed.”

A J Sebastian, Anjali Tripathy and Annamalai Vasavi are the other scholars whose literary criticism or articles are included in the section.

    BOOK REVIEWS...
Reviewing “Memory’s Gold: Writings on Calcutta,” edited by Amit Chaudhuri, Somdatta Mandal says Calcutta provokes extreme reactions – like it being a ‘dying city,’ a ‘city of palaces,’ ‘city of dreadful night,’ ‘heroine of a hundred thousand loves,’ and a ‘pestilential behemoth.

The other reviews included in the section are Sudhir Arora’s of “The Flame” a volume of poetry by Stephen Gill and Ram Sharma’s of “Creative Neighbours – SAARC Writings in English” edited by Ram Bhagwan Singh.

    FICTION...

Read P Nishant’s “Tamil Nadu Express,” a delightful and racy short fiction of a romantic encounter in a train journey. The reader happily coasts along with the flow of events till a sudden twist in the end, in the classical tradition.

The section also features interesting stories by Deepa Agarwal, R J Kalpana, M S Karikath and Jahnavi Mishra. Enjoy the variety in themes and styles.

    POEMS...
We present the fresh voice of Maaz bin Bilal, a student of Delhi, full of angst at the climate of hatred and violence. Writing about those offering prayers at the Jama Masjid, he asks:
For whom this sijdah? / To a hawk-eyed viewer / who sees them / as ants, himself perched / forever at the top?

Read the poetry of Laksmisree Banerjee, Jayanti Dalal, Sanjukta Dasgupta, S Maharana, A Maharatna, Sankar Roy, M V Satyanarayana, K S Subramanian and Samartha Vashishtha. Presenting her selection from Your Space is Ambika Ananth.
